WHERE CAN WE GO TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT OURSELVES?
1. ALL OF SCRIPTURE
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. | 2 TIMOTHY 3:16
2 .COMMUNION WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. | JOHN 16:13
3. HONEST RELATIONSHIPS
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. | PROVERBS 27:17
HOW TO HAVE HONEST CONVERSATIONS
Honest: “Sincere; without deceit or hidden motives.”
OPEN HEART SPEAKS TRUTH WITH LOVE AND RECEIVES TRUTH WITH HUMILITY
Oh, dear Corinthians! We have spoken honestly with you, and our hearts are open to you. There is no lack of love on our part, but you have withheld your love from us. I am asking you to respond as if you were my own children. Open your hearts to us! | 2 CORINTHIANS 6:11-13
AN OPEN HEART SPEAKS THE TRUTH WITH LOVE
- You cannot love someone without telling them what is true.
- You can’t properly tell someone the truth without it be motivated and shaped by love.
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness. | JAMES 3:17
KEY: Purify your motives with God in prayer.
KEY: Speak to be understood
“If you truly care about the truth you will want people to believe it. Say it in the most hearable way possible without compromising in the slightest. Don't say it in an unnecessarily abrasive way and then, when rejected, pat yourself on the back for being valiant for truth.” -Tim Keller
AN OPEN HEART RECEIVES TRUTH WITH HUMILITY
The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice. | PROVERBS 15:33
KEY: Assume positive motives unless proven otherwise
KEY: Accept the discomfort of truth is a pathway to progress
“The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable.” | Rick Warren
“Every time we make the decision to love someone, we open ourselves to great suffering, because those we most love cause us not only great joy but also great pain.” | Henri Nouwen
Truth is the pathway to deeper relationships with God and people.
TRULY OPENING OUR HEART TO OTHERS BEGINS WITH OPENING OUR HEART TO JESUS
